It was a remarkable night for a pair of former Cougars as Jake Toolson and Jordan Chatman delivered huge performances in tournament championship wins.
Toolson carried the Utah Valley Wolverines on the offensive end in an 87-72 win over Long Beach State in the final of the middleweight bracket of the MGM Resorts Main Event
The junior wing had a perfect shooting night as he connected on all 10 of his attempts (8-for-8 from the field, 2-for-2 from distance and 2-for-2 from the foul line) while scoring a team-high 20 points. He also chipped in with five rebounds, four assists and a steals in 32 minutes of action.
It was the fifth time in six tries that he has scored in double figures for the 3-3 Wolverines.
On the season, Toolson is averaging 14.5 points a night on 61.4 percent shooting from the floor, including 52.4 percent from 3-point land. He also contributes 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 33.7 minutes.
As for Chatman, he delivered a massive offensive game of his own as his Boston College Eagles knocked off Loyola Chicago 78-66 to take home the championship of the Fort Myers Tip-off.
The former Cougar sharpshooter finished with a game-high 20 points on the strength of a 7-for-13 shooting night from the floor, including 3-for-6 from 3-point land. He added six rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes.
Through five games, Chatman is averaging 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 37.6 minutes.
Kajon Brown didn’t have as much success as his totaled two points, two rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block as his Lions fell to Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday, 69-59.
On the season, Brown is averaging 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 16.2 minutes.
Cougs in the pros
Kyle Collinsworth didn’t have the greatest night as the Raptors 905 got beat by the Windy City Bulls, 99-91. In the eight-point loss, he totaled eight points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He added five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, but also turned the ball over four times and got blocked twice.
Through three games, Collinsworth is averaging 10.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals in 30.1 minutes a night.
Eric Mika was back in the lineup on Wednesday as his Germani Brescia Leonessa hammered Galatasaray Istanbul, 88-65. The former Cougar Big man came off the bench in the huge win and contributed four points and four rebounds in 12:47 of work.
Through seven EuroCup games, Mika is averaging 4.6 points on 50 percent shooting with 2.7 rebounds in 12:58.
Brandon Davies also had a tough night as Zalgiris Kaunas dropped a heartbreaking 99-97 overtime decision to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. He snapped a six-game streak of scoring in double figures, finishing with eight points on 2 of 9 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe while grabbing five rebounds in 22:14.
In eight EuroLeague games, Davies is averaging 13.4 points on 53.3 percent shooting from the field and 73 percent at the free-throw line to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24:13.
Matt Carlino had another productive night off the bench on Tuesday as Roanne knocked off Orleans 90-72 to advance to the Leaders Cup championship. In the win, he registered 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 26 minutes.
In eight Leaders Cup games, Carlino is averaging 12.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23.1 minutes.
