The New Orleans Pelicans came back from the all-star break the same way they went into it – with a loss. The Pelicans dropped to 27-27 on the season with a 95-84 setback to the Orlando Magic on Friday night.
Victor Oladipo led the way for the Magic with 22 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the floor. Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier also made big contributions as Orlando improved to 18-39 on the season. Vucevic finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Fournier totaled 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Another key in the win was the play of Elfrid Payton who had 10 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds with no turnovers.
Tyreke Evans and Anthony Davis led the way for the Pelicans in the loss. Evans managed 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds while Davis had a double-double of his own with 13 points and 11 boards. Eric Gordon added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists while Ryan Anderson and Quincy Pondexter chipped in with 13 points apiece.
Jimmer Fredette was the primary back up guard with the departure of Toney Douglas. There was no room left on the roster for Douglas after the Pelicans made a deadline deal that saw them trade John Salmons as part of a three-team deal for Shawne Williams, Justin Hamilton and Norris Cole from the Miami Heat.
Fredette totaled two points on 0-for-3 shooting from the floor, including 0-for-1 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He added two rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes of action.
Up next for Fredette and New Orleans is a matchup with the Heat on Saturday night.
