Manu Ginobili led the way as the San Antonio Spurs overcame a late deficit to outlast the New Orleans Pelicans 95-93 in overtime on Wednesday night. The Spurs used a buzzer-beating tip credited to Tim Duncan to tie the game at the end of regulation before turning to Ginobili in overtime for the hard-fought win.
Ginobili finished with 26 points on 9 for 17 shooting from the floor, including 5 for 8 from beyond the arc. Duncan added 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocks while Marco Belinelli chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
Anthony Davis led the way on a terrible shooting night for the Pelicans who finished 34 for 89 from the field (38.2 percent), including 8 of 28 from 3-point land (28.6 percent) . Davis totaled 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the floor to go along with 12 rebounds and four steals. Ryan Anderson added a double-double of his own with 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans also scored in double figures even though neither shot the ball well. Holiday registered 13 points on 5 of 18 shooting to go along with nine assists, six rebounds and two steals while Evans had 15 points on 5 of 18 shooting.
All it took was a chance and some touches for Jimmer Fredette to show that he could be a valuable part of the Pelicans. He played 24:08 in the loss and had his best showing since signing in New Orleans. He tallied 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc and 2 for 2 from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds as New Orleans dropped to 16-16 on the season.
Fredette did all of his damage in the second half and overtime. His most impressive stretch came at the end of the third quarter when he scored eight points in 53 seconds to cut the Spurs led to 62-60 with two 3-point shots and two free-throws. He added a pair of midrange jumpers during the middle of the fourth to reach his first double-figure scoring game in a Pelicans uniform. After an excellent showing in the second half, Fredette played the entire overtime and added another basket on a fast break lay-up.
Up next for Fredette and the Pelicans is a battle with the Houston Rockets on Friday night.
