Matt Carlino had a difficult night from the field as the Marquette Golden Eagles fell to the No. 20 ranked Michigan State Spartans 79-68 on Friday night.
Denzel Valentine had a blistering night shooting the ball from behind the arc to lead the Spartans. He finished with 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting, including 6 of 10 from 3-point land. He got plenty of help from Travis Trice who had 19 points on 50 percent shooting to go along with seven assists and six rebounds.
Duane Wilson led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the floor, including 2 of 3 from distance. He added three assists and three steals in the loss. Marquette also got double figure scoring efforts from Steve Taylor Jr., and Deonte Burton. Taylor had 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals while Burton had 10 points on four rebounds.
Following his record-setting night, Carlino didn’t have the same success against the Spartans. In 38 minutes of action, he recorded 14 points on 4 of 13 shooting from the floor, including 2 of 6 from deep and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. He added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
After starting out the game by missing his first six shot attempts, Carlino got on track with a pair of 3-point shots late in the first half. he finished 2 for 10 from the floor in the first 20 minutes, but had five boards as well as all four of his assists and all three of his steals.
He totaled eight second half points on 2 of 3 shooting from the floor and 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.
Up next for Carlino and the Golden Eagles is a third place game against Tennessee on Sunday.
