BYU Cougs in the news: Hill, Williams score huge touchdowns; Abouo, Davies, and Fredette have monster games (video)

It has been a great weekend to be a Cougar. Not only did BYU knock off No. 14 ranked Boise State in Provo on Saturday but a bunch of legends played well on the hardwood and the gridiron in the pros.

Taysom Hill came up with a pair of big plays as the Saints held off the Chicago Bears, 36-25. The former BYU signal-caller came up with a key third-down run on one of the strangest plays you ever see. He caught an option pitch from the fullback and burst down the right side for 23 yards.

Hill added another important play a few minutes later when he caught a short swing pass before trucking a Bears’ defender on his way to a 4-yard touchdown.

Jamaal Williams also made his biggest impact as a receiver as the Green Bay Packers improved to 6-1 with a 42-24 win over the Oakland Raiders.

The all-time leading rusher for the Cougars caught four passes for 26 yards including a 2-yard touchdown.

So far this season, Williams has rushed for 195 yards on 43 carries and caught 16 passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns.

On the hardwood

Brandon Davies showed out again in Spanish League play as Barcelona came away with an 89-75 win over Gran Canaria on Sunday.

In the win, Davies finished with 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field including a make on his only 3-point attempt. He added eight rebounds (three on the offensive end), two assists, a steal and a block in 20:22 coming off the bench.

Through five games in the ACB, Davies is averaging 15.4 points on 60.5 percent shooting inside the arc, 55.6 percent from 3-point land and 84.2 percent at the foul line. He also chips in with 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 blocks in 21.4 minutes.

Charles Abouo had a strong shooting night on Saturday in a matchup with his former team as FOS Provence dropped a tough 101-98 decision to Blois. In the setback, the former Cougar registered 22 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor and 7-for-9 from the foul line. He added six rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of work.

Through two games in Pro B action, Abouo is averaging 14 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.0 assists in 21 minutes.

Jimmer Fredette also had a productive Saturday as Panathinaikos roughed up P.A.O.K. 104-88. In the win, the former BYU star delivered a team-best 23 points on the strength of 6-for-7 shooting from beyond the arc. He also handed out a season-high seven assists and collected three rebounds in 29 minutes.

Through four games in the Greek League, Fredette is averaging 17.8 points on 60 percent shooting from the floor, 68.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc, and 83.3 percent at the free-throw line. He also contributes 3.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 22.3 minutes.

Frank Bartley IV continued to put up fantastic numbers on Saturday in an 87-80 loss. In the defeat, he recorded a game-high 24 points on  8-for-14 shooting from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 4-for-6 at the line. He added three rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in 35 minutes.

In four games, Bartley is averaging 18.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steals in 28:41 on the court.
