Carlino carries Sharks to huge win; Davies has big night in playoff game victory, earns Rookie of the Year

Matt Carlino delivered one of his best all-around games as a pro as his Roseto Sharks came away with an 80-73 win over Cuore Napoli Basket in the first game of the best-of-three playout series.

The former BYU guard just missed out on a triple-double, finished with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field, including 2-for-5 from distance and 2-for-2 from the foul line. He added 11 rebounds and tied a season high with eight assists in 30 minutes of work.

While he didn’t look for his own shot much in the first half, Carlino was instrumental in keeping the Sharks close thanks to his fine play running the show as he handed out five assists.

He then picked up the offense early in the third quarter as he knocked down back-to-back 3-point shots as the Sharks turned a two-point halftime deficit into a nine-point lead.

Carlino added six more points in the late in the fourth as Roseto held off Napoli to secure the game 1 win.

In four playout games, he is averaging 16 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 30.3 minutes.

Brandon Davies also had a fine performance in Game 1 of the LKL playoffs as Zalgiris Kaunas hammered Nevezis on Saturday, 95-70.

In the convincing win, Davies totaled 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe. He also chipped in with three rebounds, two blocks and an assist in just 18:23 on the floor.

The LKL TV YouTube channel shared highlights of the win.

His performance on the floor wasn’t the only time that Davies made headlines over the weekend.

On Friday, Eurohoops.net named Davies along with Anthony Gill as co-Rookies of the Year for EuroLeague.

Now I know what some of you are thinking – Davies isn’t even close to being a rookie. But the award is based on his play in EuroLeague competition where the former BYU big man participated for the first time.

In 34 games during the regular season and playoffs, Davies averaged 9.4 points on 58.8 percent shooting from the field and 86.1 percent from the free-throw line. He also contributed 3.3 rebounds in 17:08.

Davies and Zalgiris will be back on the floor this week in EuroLeague action as they head to the Final Four.

Charles Abouo saw action over the weekend where he finished with five points, three rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes as FOS-Provence came away with an 87-74 win over Aix-Maurienne.

In 33 games, Abouo is averaging 12.9 points on 45.1 percent shooting with 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals in 27.8 minutes.
