Sunday morning quarterback: Stars and stats from Utah’s 19-13 win over BYU

Utah got everything it needed out of dual-threat quarterback Tyler Huntley, as he and a stingy defense carried the Utes to a 19-13 win over the BYU Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday night.

Scoring recap

Utah failed to capitalize on some excellent field positions and had to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Matt Gay. The drive started at the BYU 9-yard line thanks to a 29-yard interception return from Boobie Hobbs, but three run plays netted just 6 yards before the kick.

The Utes pushed their lead to 6-0 when Gay hit another short field goal in the second quarter. The key play on the drive came from Siaosi Wilson, who caught a 48-yard pass from Huntley to move the ball into BYU territory.

Utah extended its lead to 9-0 at the end of the first half on a 31-yard field goal from Gay. Darren Carrington II played a big role on the 14-play drive with receptions of 15 and 22 yards to help the Utes move the chains.

The Utes finally found the end zone on their first possession in the third quarter when Huntley found a seam and took it to the house from 5 yards out to widen the gap to 16-0. The key play to set up the score came from Filipo Mokofisi of the defense, who intercepted a tipped Mangum pass and returned it 6 yards to the BYU 23.

BYU answered with touchdown of its own midway through the third when Ula Tolutau scored from a yard out to cut the Utah lead to 16-6. It was a short drive set up by Fred Warner, who gave the Cougars excellent field position as he pounced on a bad snap to give BYU the ball back deep in Utah Territory.

Utah bounced back two possessions later when Gay hit his fourth field goal of the night, from 38 yards out to make it 19-6. Samson Nacua was the main weapon for the Utes on the drive with catches of 21, 8 and 14 yards.

After a huge defensive stop gave the Cougars some life, the offense responded with its second touchdown of the night when Mangum found Trey Dye on a 7-yard pass to cut the deficit to 19-13. Beau Tanner was a key on the drive as he caught a pair of third-down passes to move the sticks.
