Morning links: Utes picked over BYU as best football team from Utah; Jamaal Williams looks like an ‘every-down’ back

Ben Kercheval of CBS Sports picked the best college football team in each state heading into the 2017 season, and the Utes were the pick in Utah.

“We always get a sizable amount of #readerengagement from the Holy War crowd on this,” Kercheval wrote. “It’s what makes this particular state fun and stressful. Both teams are coming off 9-4 efforts, but Utah won the head-to-head and having Kyle Whittingham for a coach sprinkles on enough extra points.”

It’s hard to argue with the pick since the Utes have beaten the Cougars 11 of the last 14 games, including the current streak of six straight.

Jamaal Williams leads Packers’ rookie running backs

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky broke down how the Green Bay Packers’ 2017 draft class has looked after two weeks in training camp, and he had some high praise for BYU’s all-time leading rusher, Jamaal Williams.

“If anyone is going to unseat Ty Montgomery as the starting running back, it will be Williams,” wrote Demovsky. “Williams looks like an every-down back; he has the power needed on first and second down and also can pass protect on third downs.”

Demovsky also had some good things to say about former Utah State running back, Devante Mays, saying, “Mays showed some shiftiness for a bigger back (230 pounds) on a swing pass to the left flat in the preseason opener.”
