Tyler Haws had his most productive game in Spain as Rio Natura Monbus Obradoiro CAB knocked off Gipuzkoa BC San Sebastian 81-68. With the win, Rio Natura Monbus improved to 3-2 on the young season to move into eighth place in the Liga Endessa standings. They are now a perfect 3-0 at home.
Rio Natura had an excellent shooting night in the victory, hitting on 31 of 61 shots from the floor (50.8 percent), including 9 for 22 from 3-point land (40.9 percent). They also did a nice job distributing the basketball with 20 assists on the 31 made baskets and just eight turnovers.
Angelo Caloiaro (San Francisco) and Adam Waczynski had solid performances in the game. Caloiaro totaled 14 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Waczynski registered 17 points on a perfect shooting night from beyond the arc with three rebounds and a steal.
Rio Natura also got nice outings from Eimantas Bendzius and Donnie McGrath (Providence). Bendzius had 11 points on 4 for 8 shooting from the field with five rebounds and two assists while McGrath chipped in with seven points and a team-high eight assists.
Landon Milbourne (Maryland) and Txemi Urtasun led the way for Gipuzkoa who fell to 0-5 with the loss. Milbourne recorded 18 points on 9 for 12 shooting from the floor with four rebounds and a steal while Urtasun added 16 points on 6 for 11 shooting from the floor, including 2 for 5 from 3-point land.
Jordi Grimau and David Doblas also reached double figures for Gipuzkoa. Grimau had 13 points on 4 for 6 shooting from the floor, including 3 for 4 from distance to go along with six rebounds while Doblas managed 11 points on 4 for 6 shooting from the floor and 3 for 3 from the free-throw line. Former UCLA big man Travis Wear added three points, five rebounds and three assists in 17 minutes off the bench.
Haws was the leading scorer in the game with a career-high 19 points on 7 for 11 shooting from the floor, including 2 for 4 from beyond the 3-point arc and 3 for 3 from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds and was a +10 in 23:33 of action.
On the season, Haws has played in five games and is averaging 11.8 points on 52.3 percent shooting from the floor, including 35.7 percent from distance and 100 percent from the free-throw line. He is also adding 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 21 minutes a game.
Up next for Haws and Rio Natura is a tough matchup with league leader FC Barcelona Lassa. Barcelona is 7-1 on the year, including 3-1 in Euroleague.
