The Marquette Golden Eagles overcame a late 4-point deficit thanks to some huge shots by Matt Carlino to outlast the Creighton Bluejays 53-52 on Wednesday night. Carlino scored seven of the last nine points for Marquette, including a 3-point shot with 11 seconds remaining for the 1-point victory
Carlino and Duane Wilson did most of the damage on the offensive end as the Golden Eagles improved to 10-6 on the season, including 2-2 in the Big East. Carlino finished with 19 points on 6 for 10 shooting from the field, including 3 for 5 from behind the arc as well as 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. He added three assists and two rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Wilson added 17 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from distance to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Derrick Wilson chipped in with six points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Carlino went on a pair of streaks to do most of his scoring. He scored eight straight points in the first half on the strength of two made 3-point shots to give the Golden Eagles a commanding 14-point lead. He followed that up in the second half with his late-game heroics.
Rick Kreklow and Toby Hegner led the way for the Bluejays. Kreklow totaled 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting as well as four rebounds and three steals while Hegner added 10 points and six boards.
Up next for Carlino and the Golden Eagles is a matchup with Xavier on Saturday.
