The MLB All-Star game on Tuesday night was all about Derek Jeter and his accomplishments. At least, that’s what it sounded like when I listened to the game on the radio. They mentioned his name and his legacy at least three dozen times through the course of the game. Jeter has been a great player and earned plenty of recognition throughout his career, but it was just a complete overkill. Especially when you consider that they failed to mention the legacy of a baseball legend who just recently lost his fight with cancer. Tony Gwynn was a great player during his Major League career and deserved to be remembered on such a special night. After all, he was a perennial All-Star who thrived on the big stage. There is no doubt in my mind that Major League Baseball made a huge mistake by not honoring Gwynn when they had the chance.
That wasn’t the only mistake that happened in the game, however. The other mistake has been going on for years and really needs to be changed as soon as possible. The problem that needs to be corrected is the fact that the winner of the game gets home field advantage during the World series. There just can’t be anything riding on the game other than pride. Home field advantage is a huge deal and shouldn’t be decided in such a trivial fashion. If the game is going to mean so much then there are a few things that need to change. The first is that fans should not be able to vote on who plays. If the game means something than it should be about who is the best and not who is the most popular. The second thing is that not every team should be represented. You need the best players on the field to decide something so important and that doesn’t happen when every team has a guy on the roster. The other thing is that everybody on the roster doesn’t need to play. Why would you take the best players off the field early in a meaningful game? That just doesn’t make sense.
The All-Star game needs to go back to what it was intended to be, an exhibition. If not, then changes need to be made so that the teams are doing all they can to win.
