BYU Cougs in the news: Davies shines in playoff opener; former teammates square off in France

Brandon Davies continued his strong play on Tuesday as Zalgiris Kaunas opened up the LKL playoffs with a resounding 89-70 win over Dzukija.

The former BYU big man led the way for Zalgiris with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field while knocking down both of his free throws. He added a pair of boards and a blocked shot in just 12:19 of work.

Davies also delivered in a big way on Sunday as Zalgiris wrapped up the regular season with a 91-75 win over Vilnius. In the victory, he registered a game-high 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor and 5-for-7 from the charity stripe. He also chipped in with six rebounds (four on the offensive end), four assists, three blocks and a steal in 23:40.

Carlino, Abouo square off in France

Former Cougar teammates Matt Carlino and Charles Abouo got reacquainted on the floor on Sunday as two of the strongest teams in France’s Pro B battled it out in an 84-78 win for Carlino’s Roanne squad.

In the win, Carlino recorded 18 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and 6-for-7 from the line. He added two rebounds, two steals, and an assist in 23 minutes on the floor.

Through 30 games, Carlino is averaging 14 points on 39.4 percent shooting from distance and 83.3 percent at the foul line. He also contributes 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 22.3 minutes.

Abouo also had a solid night in the loss, finishing with 11 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. He added a game-high eight rebounds and a steal in 24 minutes.

Through 19 games, Abouo is averaging 10.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.3 steals in 24.4 minutes.

Bryant puts up big numbers in Israel

Elijah Bryant has continued to put up good numbers for one of the best teams in Israel. He had another big scoring night on Sunday in a 91-82 loss to Hapoel Gilboa Galil, totaling 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 35 minutes.

Through 30 games, Bryant is averaging 17.3 points on 55.8 percent shooting from the floor. He also averages 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals in 31.8 minutes.

Mika’s season comes to an end in Germany

 Eric Mika saw his season come to an end over the weekend as Medi Bayreuth dropped a pair of games to finish outside of the BBL playoffs. In 15 games in Germany’s top league, he averaged 12 points on 67 percent from inside the arc and 81 percent at the foul line. He also put up 5.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 20.1 minutes.

Mika also put up similar numbers in the Basketball Champions League, averaging 12 points on 66.7 percent shooting with 6.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 18 minutes.
