While the CBA regular season in more than a month away for Jimmer Fredette and his Shanghai Sharks, there will be plenty of opportunities to see them on the floor in the coming weeks.

Fredette and the Sharks make their second straight appearance in Singapore’s Merlion Cup which will begin on Sept. 20. The Sharks are in Group A of the seven-team tournament which features some of the top teams from Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia and the Philippines.

Joining the Sharks in Group A are Satria Muda Pertamina from Indonesia, Jeonju KCC Egis from Korea and NLEX-SCTEX from the Philippines.

Shanghai and Fredette will play at least four games in the five-day tournament with a possible fifth game coming if they can make it into the semi-finals.

After the trip to Singapore, the Sharks will head to Houston for an Oct. 5 matchup with the Houston Rockets. It will be the second straight year that the Sharks and Rockets will meet in Houston.

Another former Cougar sharpshooter, Jonathan Tavernari has been very busy on the court in Italy lately. He has already played three preseason games where he has made some solid contributions.

He finished with eight points in a 79-72 win over Sidigas Avellino as he knocked down two 3-point shots and another bucket. He followed that up with six points in the rematch two days later.

On the gridiron

It didn’t take long for former BYU safety Kai Nacua to get a call up the active roster for the Cleveland Browns.

According to ClevelandBrowns.com, Nacua and linebacker B.J. Bello were moved up to the active roster on Friday. The move comes a day after the Browns released safety Calvin Pryor after a fight with wide receiver Ricardo Louis.

Two other Cougars on NFL rosters, Kyle Van Noy and Daniel Sorensen played against each other in the regular season opener on Thursday as the New England Patriots got beat by the Kansas City Chiefs.

During the 42-27 Kansas City victory, Van Noy finished second on the Patriots with six tackles, including five of the solo variety while Sorensen totaled three solo tackles of his own.

On the diamond

It has been an eventful few weeks for Jacob Hannemann. After stringing together a double-digit game hitting streak and showing off some power with a couple of home runs, he was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs which made him available to be picked up by another team. The Seattle Mariners jumped at the chance to pick up the speedy outfielder who is now with Seattle as part of the 40-man roster.
