Morning links: Tanner Mangum, Luke Falk among top 25 college QBs; Jazz ‘struck gold’ with Mitchell

Matt Brown of Sports on Earth ranked the top college quarterbacks heading into the 2017 season, and BYU signal caller Tanner Mangum made the list at No. 24.

Speaking of Mangum, Brown wrote, “Mangum’s career arc is certainly not typical. The No. 7 QB in the recruiting class of 2012 — when Jameis Winston was No. 1 — Mangum went on a two-year LDS mission. Then, he was supposed to back up Taysom Hill as a freshman, but an injury to Hill pushed Mangum into the lineup. He promptly beat Nebraska with a Hail Mary and Boise State with another miracle pass in his first two games. Mangum ultimately threw for 3,377 yards that season.

After mentioning that Mangum was the backup to Hill for the 2016 season, Brown continued, “Now, it’s Mangum’s turn, again, as the 23-year-old junior gives second-year coordinator Ty Detmer a talented pure passer to work with.”

Former Logan High School quarterback Luke Falk also made the list at No. 10.

After talking about Falk’s production the last two seasons, Brown wrote, “Originally a walk-on, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Falk has grown into one of college football’s most prolific passers, leading the Cougars to 17 wins over the past two years — the only two winning records Wazzu has had since 2003.”
