Jimmer Fredette tracker, CBA game 38: Chronicling Fredette’s 22 straight overtime points from his 73-point night (video)

Jimmer Fredette had a career night on Sunday as he finished with 73 points on 25 for 49 shooting from the floor, including 10 for 18 from 3-point range and a perfect 13 for 13 from the free-throw line. It was the most points scored in the CBA this season – Errick McCollum had the previous season-high with 65 on Jan. 22 – and the fourth most points in a CBA game ever, according to ESPN’s Qixin Wang.

As impressive as Fredette’s 73-point performance was, it was what he did in the two overtime periods that was absolutely mind-blowing.

Fredette started out his clutch shooting in the final seconds of regulation when he connected on a pair of free throws to break the 50-point barrier and push the game to overtime.

After going scoreless for the first 2:15 of the first extra session, Fredette went to work and single-handedly kept the Sharks in the game. He scored on four different possessions in the first overtime, and each time it tied the score.

He got things going (again) with under three minutes to go, when he pulled up from the right-wing and drilled a three to tie the game at 113. He followed that up with two free throws before adding a driving lay-up after he smoked two defenders on a spin move to get a clear lane to the basket. His last bucket was the most important as he leaned in trying to draw contact in the final seconds. While he didn’t get the foul call, he managed to keep both feet behind the arc as he pulled up and connected on an off-balance three to tie the score at 120.

He continued his remarkable finish in the second overtime with 12 more points, including a floater that tied the game at 122, followed by a steal that resulted in a three-point play for the 125-122 lead. After the Lions cut the Sharks’ lead to one, Fredette answered again with another lay-up to extend the lead back to three.

After five straight points from the Lions, he once again answered the bell with another highly contested three to give the Sharks a 130-129 lead with under a minute left. The Lions responded with six straight points before Fredette scored a final lay-up to bring the Sharks to within three.

The Sharks got a defensive stop and one last chance to tie, but Fredette didn’t get the ball and a left-wing 3-point attempt from a teammate went long.

On the season, Fredette finished second in the league in scoring at 37.3 points a night – McCollum totaled 47 points on Sunday to push his average to 37.5 points – on 48.1 percent shooting from the floor, including 41.1 percent from beyond the arc and 92.8 percent from the foul line. He added 7.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals in 39.3 minutes for the 30-8 Sharks who will head into the CBA playoffs as the No. 3 seed.

  1. Great summary, it was hard to keep track of all the amazing plays as the overtime was going. Jimmer spent a lot of time getting knocked down, he could not buy a call down the stretch.
