The Marquette Golden Eagles overcame the absence of leading scorer Matt Carlino as they knocked off the Seton Hall Pirates 57-54 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.
The defense came up big for the Golden Eagles as they snapped a six game losing streak. They held the Pirates to just 18-for-59 shooting from the floor (30.5 percent).
Steve Taylor Jr., led the way for Marquette with 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor with six rebounds and two steals off the bench. JaJuan Johnson and Luke Fischer also made big contributions in the win. Johnson finished with 14 points on 50 percent shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Fischer totaled 10 points and four blocks. Juan Anderson added nine points and 10 rebounds while Duane Wilson chipped in with nine points, three rebounds and three steals.
Sterling Gibbs led the way for the Pirates with 16 points, but shot just 4-for-12 from the floor. Jaren Sina added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point land while Angel Delgado had six points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals.
Matt Carlino did not play after suffering a concussion from a nasty fall in the loss to Villanova on Wednesday night.
Up next for Carlino and the Golden Eagles is a matchup with Xavier on Tuesday night.
