The Matt Carlino tracker: Game 22

Marquette had no answers for the Wildcats as No. 7 ranked Villanova drilled the Golden Eagles 70-52 on Wednesday night in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Both teams struggled to make shots to start the game as the Wildcats held a 14-12 lead at the under 8-minute timeout in the first half before Darrun Hilliard II jump started the Wildcats’ offense. He scored seven points and assisted on a 3-point shot from Phil Booth as Villanova used a 10-0 run to blow the game wide open.

Ryan Arcidiacono led a balanced offensive attack for the Wildcats with 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Four other Villanova players scored in double figures, including Hillard who totaled 12 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals. Josh Hart added 11 points while Booth and JayVaughn Pinkston had 10 points apiece.

JaJaun Johnson led the way for the Golden Eagles with 10 points off the bench. Luke Fischer totaled nine points and five rebounds while Duane Wilson had eight points as Marquette lost for the sixth straight game after starting the season at 10-6.

Matt Carlino had a really rough night in the loss. He managed just nine points on 3-for-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-6 from 3-point land. He added a team-high nine rebounds, two assists and two steals, but also had four turnovers in 28 minutes. He also suffered a nasty fall in the second half and landed right on his face.
