The Cougar NBA tracker, Jimmer Fredette: Game 44

The New Orleans Pelicans overcame a huge game from Monta Ellis to knock off the Dallas Mavericks 109-106 at the Smoothie King Center on Sunday night.

Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans led the way as the Pelicans won their third game in a row to improve to 23-21 on the season. Davis finished with 28 points on the strength of a 12-of-14 shooting night from the free-throw line to go along with 10 rebounds and five steals while Evans registered 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field with a game-high 12 assists. Ryan Anderson totaled 18 points and five rebounds while Quincy Pondexter had 14 points. five rebounds and three assists. Omer Asik also had a solid game with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds.

Ellis led a strong back court performance from the Mavericks in the loss. He had 36 points on 16-of-27 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Rajon Rondo added 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting as well as nine assists, eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Dirk Nowitzki managed 24 points, but made only 8-of-19 attempts from the field. Dwight Powell chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists in only 15 minutes on the floor off the Dallas bench.

Jimmer Fredette played for the first time in three games, but it was for exactly 1.7 seconds late in the fourth quarter as the Pelicans tried to hold onto the lead. His minutes in the backup point guard role have been turned over to Nate Wolters who had four points, two rebounds, an assist and two turnovers in 17:56.

If minutes are scarce now, the return of Jrue Holiday from injury in a few weeks will only limit Fredette’s opportunity to play even more as Monty Williams has showed by his recent rotation that Jimmer isn’t part of his plan.

Up next for Fredette and the Pelicans is a rematch with the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night. In the last matchup with the 76ers, Fredette had his best game of the season in a 15-point loss. He finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. He also added five assists and two rebounds and was a +8 in 23:16 of action.
