Just because you are the man in college doesn’t mean you can play in the pros. That is true in both the NFL and the NBA.
Frankly, the dumbest argument I have heard as to whether Michael Sam is an NFL player is the fact that he won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award. Just because he was it great college player doesn’t mean he can play in the league. To prove my point, all you have to do is look at other major award winners from college football. Heisman Trophy winners like Troy Smith and Tim Tebow are nowhere to be found on NFL rosters even though they won the highest honor in college football. You can also take a look at somebody like legendary BYU running back Luke Staley who won that Doak Walker Award as college football’s best running back and then never took a regular season rep in the NFL. College football players don’t always translate into the NFL and the list of guys to qualify for that is nearly endless. Vince Young and Matt Leinart were two of the best college football players I have ever seen and they we’re pretty much worthless in the NFL. After all, the NFL game is completely different from college.
As for all these people coming out and saying that his sexuality isn’t a distraction, they are completely wrong. The reason they’re wrong isn’t for the reasons you might think however. It isn’t his sexuality that is the distraction. It is the media and how they cover him that actually creates the distraction. Maybe it’s just me but I thought they were supposed to report the story and not be part of it. They need to give Sam a chance to breathe and see if he can make it in the league. If they covered him like any other 7th round pick who has a 50/50 shot to make the St. Louis Rams then nobody else would be talking about it either. Most fans don’t care about what he does in his personal life as long is he is can get it done on the field. Contrary to popular belief, most people don’t care what other people do in their private lives as long as it doesn’t affect them or isn’t against the law.
Its time for us to let the story play out without having to hear about it every five minutes. He wants to be known as a football player and he should be given the chance to do so without bringing his personal life into the story anymore.
