38. Roman Gabriel: Gabriel was selected with the first overall pick in the 1962 AFL by the Oakland Raiders, but decided to play for the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL after being selected second overall in their draft. Gabriel played for 16 years with the Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles and was named to the Pro Bowl four times.
His best seasons came in 1967, ’69, and ’73. In ’67, Gabriel led the Rams to a 11-1-2 record and a trip to the playoffs while completing 52.8 percent of his passes for 2,778 yards and 25 touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time. In ’69, he led the Rams to an 11-3 record and another trip to the playoffs while completing 54.4 percent of his passes for 2,549 yards and a league leading 24 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. For his efforts that season, Gabriel was named to the Pro Bowl, a First-Team All-Pro and the NFL MVP. In ’73, Gabriel won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in his first season with the Eagles. That year he led the league in passing yards with 3,219 and in touchdowns with 23.
For his career, Gabriel completed 52.6 percent of his passes for 29,444 and 201 touchdowns while also carrying the ball 358 times for 1,304 yards and 30 scores.
