Danny Ainge is killin me

As I was listening to a local sports talk radio show this morning, they mentioned that the Celtics had made another trade.  I was hopeful that they had acquired another piece to the puzzle until they mentioned what the trade was and I nearly crashed my car.  According to sources, as part of a three team deal the Celtics traded away MarShon Brooks and starting point guard Jordan Crawford and will get Joel Anthony and a pair of picks in return.

Now maybe its just me, but I thought the point of rebuilding/ tanking was to trade away your older players who still have some value and get back picks and young guys in return.  Joel Anthony is not really an NBA player any more, but is still in the league because he has a guaranteed deal where as guys like Crawford and Brooks are young and full of potential.

I completely understand that Rajon Rondo will be back on the floor by the end of this week so Crawford would be losing his job, but why wouldn’t you just keep him and slide him back to the two spot.  He is a much better pure shooter than Avery Bradley and is only 25 years old.  Why just give him away when he is having his best NBA season to date?

The loss of MarShon Brooks is hard to determine because Brad Stevens wasn’t using him at all.  He had a solid rookie season with the Nets before they brought in Joe Johnson.  Johnson got all his minutes and his numbers dropped.  Boston should have been a fresh start for Brooks, but for some reason he has played a grand total of 73 minutes all season.

The move is a brilliant one for the Golden State Warriors, who landed both players.  They really need back-court depth after losing Jarrett Jack to free agency in the off-season and Crawford should be able to provide that substantially better than Toney Douglas did.

trying to get more draft picks is never a bad thing, unless you are trading away proven young talent to get them.  Why trade away a guy you know can play to draft a guy you aren’t 100 percent sure on?
