The worst shooters in the NBA right now

I have watched a ridiculous amount of NBA basketball this season (like every other year) and something has become far to evident.  Very few players can shoot the ball well.  With that in mind I have decided to see who the worst shooters in the league are and then rank them accordingly.  When I first had this idea, I thought there would be a player or two under 40 percent.  What I found not only shocked me, but it proved my point even more.

The only criteria to be on the list of the worst shooters is you have to be a regular rotation player who has a legitimate sample size (20 minutes a game, and at least 20 games played so far).

Here are the worst 25 shooters in the NBA right now.

25. Josh Smith: if you are wondering why the Detroit Pistons have struggled this year all you have to do is look at the shooting numbers of Smith.  For the yea, Smith is shooting 40.1 percent on 15 attempts a game for the 14-19 Pistons.

24. OJ Mayo: Mayo was brought to the Bucks for his ability to be an effective scorer.  it is hard to do that however when you can’t make shots.  So far this season Mayo is shooting 40.1 percent from the field on 12.3 attempts per game.

23. Francisco Garcia: Garcia was re-signed by the Rockets to stretch the floor so that opposing teams couldn’t double-team Dwight Howard.  The problem is Garcia hasn’t been productive enough to make that happen. So far this season Garcia is shooting 39.5 percent from the field on 5.9 attempts per game.

22. Brandon Jennings: Jennings is in his first year with the Detroit Pistons and the change of scenery has fixed his shot selection. So far this season Jennings is shooting 39.4 percent from the field on 15.5 attempts per game.

21. Gary Neal: Neal has never met a shot he didn’t like. The problem is that are many of those shots that he can make consistently.  So far this season Neal is shooting 39.4 percent from the field on 9.3 attempts per game..

20. Raymond Felton: Felton is a solid lead guard who should look to pass a lot more often than he looks to shoot.  The reason for that is because he is shooting 39.2 percent from the field on  10.6 attempts a game.

19. Draymond Green: The Warriors have plenty of outside shooters, but Green isn’t one of them. So far this season Green is shooting 38.5 percent from the field on 4.6 attempts per game.

18. Ersan Ilyasova: Ilyasova is a stretch four who is providing much spacing for the Bucks offense because he can barely make a shot. So far this season Ilyasova is shooting 38.5 percent on 9 attempts a game.

17.  Louis Williams: Williams comes of the bench For the Atlanta and is supposed to provide instant offense.  It’s really tough to do that tough when you can’t make any shots.  So far this year Williams is shooting 38.5 percent from the floor on 9.1 attempts a game.

16. Trey Burke: Burke is supposed to be the savior of the Jazz franchise.  That won’t happen if he doesn’t start making shots. So far this season Burke is shooting 38.5 percent from the floor on 12.8 attempts a game.

15. Shawne Williams: After floating around the league for the last few years Williams has found a spot in the Lakers rotation even though he has struggled mightily with his shot.  So far this year Williams is shooting 38.2 percent on 4.9 attempts a game.

14. Marcus Thornton: Thornton comes off the bench to provide offense for the Kings second unit.  It would be a lot easier to do that if he could actually make shots.  So far this year Thorton is shooting 37.9 percent on 8.2 attempts a contest.

13. Jeff Taylor: Taylor was playing A solid all-around game so far this year before he Suffered a season ending injury.  One of the few things he wasn’t doing well was shooting the ball.  Before he got hurt, Taylor was shooting 37.6 percent from the floor in 8.4 attempts a game.

12. Jerryd Bayless: Bayless is One of the main scorers off the bench for the Memphis Grizzles.  He would provide much more of that if he could actually make a shot.  So far this season Bayless is shooting 37.5 percent from the floor in 7.7 attempts per game.

11. Randy Foye: as a member of the Utah Jazz, Foye set the franchise record with threes a season ago.  He hasn’t had the same success this year with the Denver Nuggets. So far Foye is shooting 37.5 percent on 8.1 attempts a game.

10. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: the Pistons drafted Caldwell-Pope because they needed a good shooter on the wing.  The only problem is he hasn’t been able to shoot.  So far this year Caldwell-Pope is shooting 37.4 percent in 7.1 attempts a game.

9. Matt Barnes: Barnes comes off the bench for the Clippers, but isn’t much of an option on the offensive end because he can’t make a shot.  So far this year Barnes is shooting 37.3 percent on 6 attempts a game.

8. Caron Butler: it isn’t a shock that the Bucks are the worst team in the NBA right now considering five of their players are on this list.  Butler is the second worst of the bunch making just 37.1 percent of his shots on 11.2 attempts per game.

7. Kevin Garnett: the move to Brooklyn Has been a miserable one for KG.  He has struggled with just about every aspect of his game but his shooting has suffered the most.  So far this year Garnett is shooting 36.7 percent on 7.5 attempts a contest.

6. Ben McLemore: McLemore supplanted Marcus Thornton In the starting rotation for the Kings, but is an even worse shooter.  So far this year McLemore is shooting 36.6 percent on 8.3 attempts a game.

5. Zaza Pachulia: Pachulia Has got plenty of minutes with the injury to Larry Sanders, but hasn’t shot well at all.  So far this year Pachulia is shooting 36.2 percent from the floor on 6.2 attempts a game.

4. John Salmons: The Raptors have had a ton of success since the trade brought Salmons in but his ability to make shots isn’t the reason.  So far this season Salmons is shooting 35.1 percent from the floor on 6.5 attempts per game.

3. Ricky Rubio: Rubio is a fantastic point guard who should only look to pass. So far this season Rubio is shooting 35.1 percent from the floor on 8.2 attempts a game.

2. JR Smith: Smith is one of the main reasons that the Knicks have been awful this season.  After an impressive season Last year Smith has been equally bad this time around. So far this year Smith is Shooting 34.7 percent from the floor in 12.4 attempts a contest.

1. Kirk Hinrich: Hinrich has the honor of being the least effective shooter so far this season. He is shooting a pathetic 34 percent from the floor on 7.5 attempts for the Bulls.
