There is so much talent in the college game right now that it is hard to cover it all.  While the biggest stars have been shining bright this last week, some of their teams have not with some highly ranked teams falling at the hands of so-called lesser opponents.  Kentucky and their unbelievable freshman class fell to Baylor while Kansas lost twice.   Other teams are in the midst of a long break between games so there is nothing to report like Duke and Michigan State who are right in the middle of almost a two-week breaks between games.

Here is a look at how the best players from the college game did in the last week.

Andrew Wiggins, Fr., Kansas: Wiggins had the best showing of his young college career even though his Jayhawks got beat twice.  He was more assertive at the offensive end of the floor and was definitely looked to attack the rim.

In a 75-72 buzzer-beating loss to Colorado, Wiggins scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor in only 28 minutes of action because of foul trouble.  He also attempted a career high nine free throws and made seven.

Wiggins was even better against the Florida Gators but they still got beat on the road 67-61.  He set new career highs in minutes, points, rebounds, blocks and even free throw makes.  Wiggins played 37 minutes and finished with 26 points.  He shot 7-of-15 from the floor including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.  He also recorded his first double-double of the season by grabbing 11 rebounds.

Wiggins has stepped his game up and we are now seeing why he is considered such a remarkable talent.

Wayne Selden Jr., Fr., Kansas: Selden had a rough couple of games in the two Kansas defeats.  He played 20 minutes in the loss to Colorado and attempted just six shots. He did make 3-of-6 from the field to finish the game with seven points as well as four rebounds.

The game against Florida was even tougher.  He played just 14 minutes and committed four turnovers and  made 1-of-4 shots from the field.  Selden finished the game with four points, one rebound and an assist.

Joel Embiid, Fr., Kansas: Embiid set new career highs in each game in minutes even though he was in foul trouble both games.  Against the Buffaloes, Embiid finished with ten points on 4-of-7 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block in 28 minutes before fouling out.

Embiid played 30 minutes against the Gators but only took six shots in the loss.  He finished the game with six points, six rebounds, two assists and three blocks.

Aaron Gordon, Fr., Arizona: while the Wildcats are having a lot of team success, Gordon has struggled mightily over the last week.  In a hard-fought 63-58 win over UNLV on Saturday, Gordon scored a career low four points on 2-for-10 shooting.

Against New Mexico State, Gordon was better from the field but was brutal from the free throw line as the Wildcats thoroughly beat the Aggies 74-48.  Gordon ended the game with 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field, but made just 1-of-6 from the line.  He also had his lowest rebounding output of the season with four boards.

Marcus Smart, So., Oklahoma State: Smart played well in the lone Cowboys’ game over the last week.  He showed off his great all-around skills against an undermanned South Carolina team in a 79-52 win.  Smart finished the contest with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go along with four rebounds, five assists and two steals in 31 minutes.

Smart is the kind of player who doesn’t have to score the ball to make an impact and that is what he did against the Gamecocks.

Julius Randle, Fr., Kentucky: Randle had two solid outings for the Wildcats even though Kentucky went 1-1 in the two games.  in the loss to Baylor, Randle played 38 minutes and finished the night with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

In a 70-55 win over Boise State four days later, Randle recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds while making 7-of-11 shots from the field.

James Young, Fr., Kentucky: Young shot the ball very well from deep in the 67-62 loss to Baylor making 4-of-7 shots from 3-point range on his way to 14 points in 38 minutes of action.

He didn’t shoot as well against the Broncos but still managed to have one of his better games of the season.  Young put up 21 points and nine rebounds while shooting 75 percent from inside the 3-point line.

Young’s effectiveness is predicated upon his ability to knock down outside shots to space the floor and create driving lanes.  When his shot is one, Young and the Wildcats are  a lot more difficult to guard.

Andrew Harrison, Fr., Kentucky: Harrison had a difficult night shooting against Baylor making 2-of-9 shots from the field but did have one of his better games distributing the ball.  He was able to tie a career high with six assists to go along with seven points.

He shot the ball much better against Boise State but finished that game with more turnovers than assists.  On that night, Harrison finished with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field with three rebounds, two assists and three turnovers.

Aaron Harrison, Fr., Kentucky: Harrison played pretty well in both contests and showed us something that we havent seen much from him; the ability to distribute the ball.  Against the Bears, Harrison handed out a season high six assists to go along with 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.

In the Boise State contest, Harrison showed played well on the defensive end and came away with three steals to go along with 13 points.

Glenn Robinson III, So., Michigan: The Wolverines only had one game and that was an absolute blowout over Houston Baptist.  In the 107-53 destruction of the Huskies, Robinson finished with a season high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists in 25 minutes of play.

Noah Vonleh, Fr., Indiana: Vonleh rebounded the ball well and continued to show the ability to get to the free throw line in two easy wins for the Hoosiers.  In a 89-68 win over North Florida, Vonleh  recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a season high four steals.

In the Hoosiers’ 81-54 win over Oakland, Vonleh missed out on another double-double by two points even though he attempted just five field goals.  He finished the night with eight points and ten boards.
