Still lamenting the US Open Cup Final

As I was aimlessly wandering around on the internet earlier today I stumbled upon something that almost made me sick.  It was the MLS standings.

The reason why I had such an adverse reaction to the standings is because I noticed where DC United stood.  After 33 games in league they have exactly 3 wins.  That’s right, 3 wins in 33 games.  I’m not totally sure but that has to be the lowest win total in league history (it is, I looked it up.  No team has won less than four games in a season and that was with fewer total games)

I know you are wondering why that is such a big deal?

It’s because DC United came into Rio Tinto Stadium and beat Real Salt Lake in the US Open Cup Final just three weeks ago.

Even though it’s been almost a month I still can’t get over it.

How can a team lose the biggest match of the season at home to team that has won three regular season games? Especially when all we hear about from everyone around RSL is how important CONCACAF Champions League is.

It’s just horrible on so many levels.

RSL still has two more chances to make it into Champions League but at least one of those is quite a longshot.  RSL has to win their final game of the season on Wednesday against Chivas USA and hope that New York, Sporting Kansas City and Portland all lose.

Their other chance is if they manage to bring home the MLS Cup.  Since they couldn’t beat the worst team in MLS history at home in a winner take all game, I can’t imagine that they can beat the best teams in the league to bring home the Cup.
