On a day where the Kansas defense made big plays all game long, Jake Heaps and the offense couldn’t capitalize in a painful 27-17 loss on the road to TCU.
Heaps was back under center for the entire contest after sharing time for much of last week’s game against Texas Tech. Early on in the game the Jayhawks looked to establish the ground game with running back James Sims. Sims has had a slow start to the season after carrying the ball for more than 1,000 yards a season ago. Sims had more touches Saturday than any other week this year and played well with 81 yards on the ground and another 40 through the air. Unfortunately for Sims and Kansas, he didn’t have much help.
The Jayhawks were shorthanded in the passing game without the services of wide receiver Tony Pierson and his loss was very apparent.
The Kansas offense was only able to put together two scoring drives for ten points. Both scores came on very short fields thanks to TCU turnovers. The other score for the Jayhawks came on a 32 yard interception return for a touchdown by JaCorey Shepherd midway through the second quarter to tie the game at ten.
Their only offensive touchdown of the game came after a muffed punt gave the Jayhawks the ball at the TCU 27 yard line. After an incompletion on first down, heaps was able to find Jimmay Mundine for a 27 yard score.
The Kansas offense couldn’t muster anything else as turnovers and a sack killed there only other promising drives. On the day, the KU offense only registered 198 yards of total offense and seven first downs.
As for Heaps, he was able to complete 50 percent of his passes for 152 yards to go along with the touchdown to Mundine and an interception. Even though the pick he threw wasn’t his fault, Heaps was lucky not to have thrown three or four more. The Horned Frog defense had a number of heaps throws hit them right in the hands but no one could hang on.
For the year, Heaps has completed only 52.6 percent of his passes for 887 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. Not exactly what he was hoping for when he left BYU for a fresh start.
The 2-3 Jayhawks are back on the field next Saturday as they face the Oklahoma Sooners at Memorial Stadium back home in Lawrence.
