Ranking the best starting quarterbacks in the NFL today: #32-25

Now that we are more than a quarter of the way through the NFL season its time for me to re-rank the starting quarterbacks in the league.  There have already been some changes, some disappointments and definitely some surprises. Here is how I rank the starting quarterbacks from 32 to 1 as of October 9th, 2013.

Note: this isn’t a fantasy football ranking.  The players are ranked based on who is the best player and also their importance to their respective teams.

32.  Blain Gabbert- Gabbert hasn’t really progressed at all and might be a part of the worst team in NFL history.  He does have two very talented receivers to help him out but that still doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

31.  Mike Glennon- Glennon found the field very unexpectedly after Tampa Bay benched and then released Josh Freeman.  Glennon has some skills but isn’t ready to be on the field right now.

30.  Christian Ponder- Ponder didn’t have to be great for the Vikings to return to the playoffs.  All he had to do is manage the game and make enough throws so that opposing defenses can’t load the box with eight and nine guys.  To this point the only Vikings win on the season came with Matt Cassel under center.  Ponder’s job is now up in the air thanks to the addition of Josh Freeman a few days ago.

29.  EJ Manual- Manual is side lined with injury right now but has actually shown pretty well when he has been on the field.  Even though he has had some struggles, Manual looks like he can be a legitimate signal caller in the league for years to come.

28.  Brandon Weeden- Weeden wouldn’t have a starting job today if not for a season ending injury to the Browns third string QB Brian Hoyer.  Hoyer stepped in when Weeden was hurt and played very well.  Thankfully for browns fans, Weeden has also played well this season, especially after Hoyer went down.

27.  Carson Palmer- Palmer has not looked good at all this year and might be nearing the end of his career.  Even having weapons like Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd hasn’t helped him get his career back on track.

26.  Geno Smith- Smith has been a total surprise to me.  He hasn’t put up huge numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but he has only thrown three interceptions and has the Jets sitting at 3-2 so far.

25. Terrelle Pryor- Pryor has had some nice moments this season which has been a shock to me.  He is throwing the ball very accurately and putting up decent numbers for the 2-3 Raiders.
