Even though there have been two former BYU Cougars on NBA rosters this entire season, there haven’t been many good nights for a Cougar fan. Brandon Davies is on one of the worst teams in recent history while Jimmer Fredette played limited minutes during his time with the Sacramento Kings and then was waived after the trade deadline. His minutes have been even more sporadic since landing with the Chicago Bulls.
On Monday night, that all changed (for one night at least) as both Fredette and Davies played big roles for their respective teams. Jimmer played a season high 30:35 (and the most minutes he has played in a game since his rookie season) in place of D.J Augustin and set a new Bulls career-high with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor as the Bulls knocked off the Orlando Magic 108-95. Fredette added three rebounds and two assists while being +18 while he was on the floor in his first significant game action since landing with Chicago more than a month ago.
Davies didn’t get the kind of minutes that Fredette did in the 76ers 113-108 win over the Boston Celtics, but when he was on the floor, Davies produced an impressive effort. In 12:41 on the court Davies tied his career-high with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Davies also managed three offensive rebounds and a steal as Philadelphia improved to 18-63 on the year.
Although, I’m sure it wasn’t the season that either Cougar legend hoped for, at least it is ending on a good note for both Fredette and Davies as well as giving BYU basketball fans another night to cheer for their beloved stars.
