The ceiling for Aldon Smith

As I was watching the San Francisco 49ers playing again today (like I do every week during football season since they are my favorite team) I began to focus on Aldon Smith when the defense was on the field and I couldn’t help but think that he has the ability to be one of the best defensive players in the history of the game.

As a Niners fan I clearly have a bias, but what Smith has shown in three seasons in the league is nothing short of remarkable.  Smith has played 43 games (24 starts) and already has 42 sacks.  He is a nightmare for opposing left tackles and running backs who have to try to chip him or help block.  He is virtually unstoppable when Smith has a one-on-one match-up.

With the tremendous talent that the 49ers possess on defense that happens on a regular basis.

To me it seems like the only thing that can slow down Smith are the off-field decisions that he makes.  In fact, Smith missed a bunch of games this season to go to rehab because of his choices.

My hope as a 49er fan is that Smith has his personal life under control so he can fulfill the  incredible potential he has.
