Behind an explosive kick return game and the legs of Bishop Sankey, the Washington Huskies go into halftime with a 21-16 lead over the BYU Cougars in the Fight Hunger Bowl.
Washington could only muster 144 yards offense but thanks to some bad special teams by the Cougars the Huskies put three touchdowns on the board.
Sankey carried the ball 13 times for 50 yards and their two offensive touchdowns. Washington quarterback Keith Price completed 12-of-16 passes for 94 yards. The other Huskies touchdown came on a 100 yard kick return By John Ross after the Cougars only touchdown.
The BYU offense has nearly 300 yards, but had to settle for three field goals.
Tayson Hill has completed 16-of-26 passes for 185 yards and carried the ball 19 times for 77 yards and their lone touchdown.
Cody Hoffman had eight receptions for 109 yards to lead all receivers before getting rocked on a pass attempt and leaving the field.
Justin Sorensen was perfect in the kicking game making all three of his field goal attempts including a season long of 45 yards. The rest of the BYU special teams struggled however. They allowed two long kick returns and had even more trouble in the punting game.
For the Cougars to come out of San Francisco with a win they need to clean up special teams in a big way.
