What if we had a college football playoff this year

Have you ever wondered what this season would be like in college football if there was a real way to decide who the true NCAA National Champion and not the made up garbage that they give us.  I think about it all the time, and I’m not talking about the four team playoff that they are giving us next year that is supposed to be the be all, end all either.  I’m talking about a true playoff where all the great teams have a shot at the biggest prize in the college game today.

With that in mind I’ve decided to examine what a 16 team playoff would look like this season.  The reason I chose 16 teams is because that is what they do in the NHL, NBA and most importantly that is what they do in the FCS.

Now because we are going with a 16 team tournament then that would most likely mean there would not be conference championship games.  who made the field and seeding for the tournament will be based on if those were not played.

You will notice that some teams that make the bracket aren’t exactly the top teams, but that is because like the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, conference winners get an automatic bid.  What that means is easier first round games for the power houses of college football.

Along with the bracket, I will provide you with what the outcomes of the games would be and the eventual National Champion.  For this to have worked out this year, the first round would have been played the 8th of December, the second round on the 15th, the semi-finals on Christmas Day and the Nation Final on New Years Day.

Here are the match-ups if we were so lucky.  Now keep in mind that national rankings mean absolutely nothing to me.  I have watched so much football this year that I think I have a good grasp on who deserves an invite.  Also it is important to note that even though I didn’t take the conference championships into consideration, I did focus on division winners from most of those power conferences.  With the exception of Duke (who had two conference losses), every team that won their division in a power conference made my field.

1. Florida State vs. 16. Louisiana-Lafayette

8. Stanford vs. 9. South Carolina

4. Alabama vs. 13. Northern Illinois

5. Missouri vs.  12. Louisville

6. Baylor vs. 11. Central Florida

3. Auburn vs. 14. Fresno State

7. Michigan State vs. 10. Arizona State

2. Ohio State vs. 15. Rice

I’m sure you will see that Bowling Green is noticeably absent from this tournament even though they won the MAC, but if there was no conference title game then Northern Illinois is clearly the choice.

Now that the JMoney college football tournament has been released, check back each day and see who would win each game and advance.
