The speed and athleticism of number-21 ranked UMass was too much for BYU as they fell 105 to 96 on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Without the services of their leading scorer and rebounder Cady Lalanne for much of the game, UMass went with an athletic lineup and was able to get to the hole almost at will against the weary Cougars.
Massachusetts was able to attack the rim all day long thanks to their ability to break down the BYU 2-3 zone.
Even when BYU switched defenses they had no answers for the quickness of the Minutemen.
UMass point guard Chaz Williams was especially impressive and pretty much did whatever he wanted all game long. Williams destroyed the zone defense with his passing ability and when BYU finally switched to a man to man he scored at will.
Williams ended the game with a career-high 32 points and a career-high and university record-tying 15 assists.
He wasn’t the only Minuteman player who had a big day, however.
In fact, Williams was one of just six players for UMass who finished with double figures.
The Cougars got out to an early lead before some great Minutemen three-point shooting and foul trouble became a factor. Both of the Cougar big men got in foul trouble which left the rim unprotected.
After playing well early, Eric Mika picked up a technical foul on a play where Tyler Haws was knocked to the floor. That gave him his second foul on the half, and Dave Rose sat him
Without Mika on the floor the remainder of the half, BYU struggled on both ends of the floor and the Minutemen took a 52-41 lead into halftime.
The second half started out very similar to the first as BYU got six quick points to cut the lead to five. UMass answered right back with an 11-4 run of their own to regain a double-digit lead.
BYU was able to hang around for much of the second half but could never get any closer than nine points. Every time BYU tried to swing the momentum with a big basket, Massachusetts had an answer.
BYU was led on the day by Tyler Haws who finished the game with 25 points after making 9-of-16 shots from the field and all six of his free throw attempts.
Matt Carlino also played well on the offensive end and finished with 23 points on 50 percent shooting while registering six assists and three rebounds.
Three other Cougars scored in double figures on the day.
Eric Mika nearly had another double-double finishing the game with 18 points and eight rebounds even know he would spend much the game in foul trouble.
The other two Cougars to finish the game in double figures were Kyle Collinsworth and Frank Bartley who finished the day with 14 points apiece.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday night as they are back at the Marriott center to take on Prairie View A&M before a matchup next Saturday against the arch-rival Utah Utes.
