The Jake Heaps tracker: game 11, the Iowa State Cyclones

The Jayhawks were in Ames, Iowa on Saturday night to take on the 1-9 Cyclones as Montrell Cozart made his second consecutive start.

The results were much different from a week ago however.  Cozart got pulled as Iowa State had Its way with Kansas in a 34-0 blowout.

Iowa State entered the game on a 7-game losing streak.

The Cyclones seemingly did whatever they wanted on offense all night long and racked up more than 500 yards.

The Iowa State defense played just as well.

The first half was a low scoring affair.  Both teams were able to move the ball but not get much out of it.  The only touchdown of the half came on a blown coverage by the Kansas defense.  Cyclone quarterback Grant Rohach was able to find a wide open Aaron Wimberly over the middle for an easy 58-yard score. They only other scoring on the half came on a short field goal by Cole Netten to make the score 10-0 going into the break.

The Kansas offense totaled 174 yards in the half mostly on the ground, but had nothing to show for it.  The most promising drives ended on a failed fourth down attempts deep in Cyclone territory.

Jake Heaps entered the game with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter And the Jayhawks down 20 -0.

After a three-and-out, Iowa State found the end zone again to take a 27-0 lead.  The score came on a 5-yard run by James White after to cap off a 75 yard drive with just over a minute remaining in the third.

The Jayhawks had a chance to score on the first drive of the fourth quarter but a nice throw by Heaps on a wide-open post route was dropped.

Heaps did complete two fourth down balls to keep the drive alive but Kansas didn’t score after missing on a fourth-and-6 from the Iowa State 16-yard line.

The Cyclones scored on the ensuing drive thanks to a 23-yard run from Shontrelle Johnson.  The touchdown was the last score of the game and put Iowa State up 34-0.

On the night, Cozart Completed 4-of-12 passes for 20 yards and an interception while carrying the ball 12 times for 44 yards.

Heaps was just 7-for-19 passing for 72 yards.  Although the stats do not reflect it, Heaps threw the ball very well but dropped balls were again a huge part of the story.

The loss leaves the Jayhawks with a 3-8 record including 1-7 in the Big 12.

They will be back in action on Saturday as they take on the Kansas State Wildcats in the final game of the season.
