On Friday night, Mount St. Mary’s was in town to take on the shorthanded Cougars.  Even without Haws, BYU had no problem with the Mountaineers running away with a 108-76 victory.

Anson Winder replaced Haws in the starting lineup and led the way with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting.  He also finished with six assists and three rebounds, with just one turnover.

Winder was joined in double figures by five other Cougars.

Eric Mika had his best game of the young season shooting 9-of-10 from the field on his way to 20 points.

A couple of other first year Cougars also had impressive showings.  Junior college transfer Skyler Halford tallied 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while freshman Frank Bartley put up 16 points and seven rebounds.

Kyle Collinsworth also had a nice night finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The other BYU player in double figures was Matt Carlino.  On an off shooting night, Carlino showed his all-around game, finishing with 10 points, six rebounds, eight assists, three steals and a block.

The Mountaineers were led by Julian Norfleet and Rashad Whack.  Whack finished with 19 points and six rebounds while Norfleet tallied 17 points and six assists.

The loss was the third in a row for Mount St. Mary’s as part of a very difficult road trip.

In the second game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, BYU had little trouble with Division II Colorado Mesa in a 84-60 victory even though they had a horrible shooting night.

After a tight first half, the Cougars were able to blow the game opening early in the second half.  They opened the second on a 21-to-1 run to put the game out of reach.

The same six players from the night before once again finished with double figures in scoring.

Matt Carlino led BYU in scoring with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Kyle Collinsworth finished the night with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.  They were joined by Winder with 14, Halford with 12, Mika with 11 and Bartley with 10.

Another Cougar who had a really nice game was Nate Austin.  Austin led BYU with 12 rebounds and two blocks.

The Mavericks were led by in scoring by Landon Vermeer and Jerry Duckworth.  Vermeer finished the night with 23 points while Duckworth registered 12 points on just seven field goal attempts.

Even though BYU won by 24, they shot just 1-for-21 from the three-point line and also missed 12 free throws.

BYU will be back at home on Wednesday night to face the Iowa State Cyclones.
