The Philadelphia Project

All summer we have seen more than a few NBA teams make moves that would guarantee their inclusion in next year’s draft lottery.  Some teams drafted projects that wouldn’t be able to help them right away while others let all off their veteran talent walk away via free agency.  Some teams even traded away their best and most proven talent to get draft picks.

The Philadelphia 76ers are one of those teams.  The first thing that the Sixers did came in the off-season  when they traded away young stud point guard Jrue Holiday to get injured Kentucky freshman big man Nerlens Noel.  The Sixers then drafted their replacement point guard in Syracuse freshman Michael Carter- Williams.

My first though when Philadelphia made these moves was that both players have massive amounts of potential neither one is anywhere close to being the kind of players that they could be in the future.  Both players should have stayed in school for another year to hone their games and make themselves ready for the rigors of the NBA game.

Another thing happened just today that makes me think that the Philadelphia 76ers are now the front-runners in the sweepstakes for Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Julius Randle or a few others.

After hearing most of the summer that Noel was recovering quite nicely from his torn ACL and that he should be ready by December, we learned today that the Sixers coaching staff doesn’t think that he will play at all this year.

I actually think that it’s a very good move for both the Sixers and Noel.  It gives Noel a year to recover from a terrible injury and also spent time learning the NBA game and getting stronger.  It also gives the Sixers a reason to keep one of their most talented young players off the floor in hopes of not winning too many games this year.

If it works out according to plan, the Sixers will be loaded with young talent a season from now and ready to contend in the tough Eastern Conference.
